it's getting warmer....snow is melting....

it's -3 degree C this morning, kind of warm today, and most of the road starts to get really wet, slushy and dirty now. :S

but still, we have to go to the annual Caribou Carnival, a 3days fun-filled activities in Yellowknife.
with aboriginals (natives) item, hot food and drinks tentage, little games tentages for the young ones, a small performing stage where i saw 3 guys doing the country rock thing!

oh! the dog race is going on at another venue too! it's a event where it gets everyone in the city involve.

it held on Frame Lake this year. No worry, it's frozen and strong enough to hold the whole community there! :p

just a reminder. you need to get a button (CA $3, pin up) on you else you will be lock up in a real cell!!! :p

hey i am serious hor~~~ dont ever think of gate crashing or thought nobody will notice you had walk in for free. there are marshals patrolling the area.

There are several tentages aound the lake, but this big white tent? it's the performing ground for the Aboriginal, or natives of northern Canada, or you can also know them as the first community to live here first.

this is a very native form of activity, whereby they will get in two rows, facing each other, with the help of the strong rythem of vocal and drumming. the heat is on!
With hand gestures, facial expression, no verbal interaction; they take turn to guess who has the coin in their hand in the opposite team. they uses wooden sticks as betting token. and the team with the most sticks, wins.
it's kind of fun to watch there.
my horrible photogrphy skills cannot express the strong music beat and vocal echoing inside the tentage. but, it's really an wonderful experience to see.

this white tentage is the most packed among the rest, and i also discovered one thing; there's a hot air machine outside the tentage, blowing hot air into the tentage, to ventilate the tentage.

oh yeah! it's always a wonderful thing to have a cup of hot drinks in the middle of freezing condition. this latte (small) cost me CA $3.35 plus tax.
yes, i know i wear like i am inSingapore.... hello!? i AM a tourist here leh~~~~ :p

tonight's dinner were some miscommunication.
We were sort of coming back late to make dinner, Ginny's parents thought we will be making dinner again. so....
Ginny's mom makes a pasta quickie! with ready-frozen meat sauce and she just need to cook the pasta and defrost/heat up the gralic bread.
and me? i quickly marinate the chicken wings and deep fry them to a nicely done texture to go with the meat sauce pasta.
yeah....you can say it's the west-meet-east dinner again! :p
ha ha ha ha .....

Bullock's Bristo @ Yellowknife

this is just a portion/part of the ceiling only.... this whole place is basically written all over! err... well, not the kitchen stove...yet! hahaha
Client brings their own felt-marker to leave a trace here. Some even stick their namecard on the walls! some even had their lovely pictures pin onto the walls too. :)

they made these soft bread themself! it has a slight hint of "yeast" smell, but it's sure soft n nice. Limited to 1 per customer. Late-comer don't gets it. and this bread actually meant to give you something to munch while waiting for your fish to come.

They cook orders table by table. so we waited for quite some time.... i am hungry! :p

i can assure you that this bread is really good to suck up all the sauces on your plate when you finish your fish! they become even more delicious! and you get your plate wipe clean! :p

Voted the best Fish n' Chips by Reader Digest!
with lots of fresh lettuce and fresh deep-fried fries!
a bit of chopped garlic and parsley on top.
i had the "Pikalor" fish from the lake beside this bristo.
its fresh...taste n texture like our "Kuning" Fish in Sg.
For pan-fried, they pour a salty-sweet sauce over the fish.
it somehow taste like the "HK-steam fish" sauce kind of thing, but cooler version.

a small eating place with just few tables. Full house just when we were seated at about 5.30pm!

1 lady-chef cooking right in front of you, and 1 lady-server running the rest of the show!
Fries are cut into strips with a press-tool, just before deep-frying.
yupe! they put a whole potato in and press! and thick potatoes strips we have!
for 5 of us, we spent about CA$180 for 5 plates of pan-fried Fish n' Chips, with soft drinks and Tax included.

Northern Lights! Aurora Borealis! @Yellowknife

how lucky are we to see Northern Lights in our 1week-homestay in Yellowknife!

it's our 4th day of stay here and we finally get to see it! :) [the past few nights were cloudy]

even Ginny Parents said its not so common to see them now in Yellowknife. Although they use to see it every night when the sky is clear. Sometimes when it happen and will be gone within minutes you notice it.
but we sure watched for more than 15mins of tax free, admission free, best performance from the sky before we went to bed.

kenny took a few pic with his camera and here i share with you.

little facts:
Aurora Borealis (northernlights); are a phenomenon happening far above the Earth. The lights are born out of the solar winds flowing across the upper atmosphere and hitting gas molecules, which light up like a neon sign.

when it happen in the North, it also happen at the South at the same time, like mirror effect.
they moves, splits up, combines, changes every seconds, like they are dancing in the sky. and the Colours changes too. though i saw mostly green, but there's a faint red colour at the base of it.
it's like a wavvy, "foggy" kind of river, right above your head!
it's really beautiful.
an masterpiece by Mother Nature. :)

Video short clip to share! live from Canada.

This clip was taken on 25th march, between 1pm-2pm (Canada, Yellowknife Timing). Walking downhill and gtting back to the car.

Location: Prelude Lake (along Ingraham Trail, 30km from Yellowknife)

Reason: to snow picnic and visit the place where my childhood friend, Kenny, who had a wedding ceremony there, to marry Ginny; almost 2yrs ago during Summer. i couldn't make it then when my father had just passed away.

Inside Hot, Outside Cold!

here i am. cooking dinner for them. i am making sweet sour chicken and stir fry Pak Choy for them to go with plain rice.

i have difficulty using the electricity stove. everything seem so difficult to get heat up.
lucky i started to cook earlier so dinner still gets on time at 6pm! yummy......

here is CO-OP, where we can find limited "fresh" products...err.... actually they had been travelling for the past 24hrs before they can reach here.

everything was so expensive. i cannot find my Choy Sum or Kai Lan :(
i did saw some miserable soft Bean sprouts... nope, not the fresh crunchy type.....

guess what? a pineapple cost about S$8 plus??!?!?!?!?!?!

a Buang kwang (turnip) cost me about S$7 plus, which i can get in Singapore for ...say.... S$1.50?? but i need them to make spring roll for them.
they love deep fried spring rolls and sweet sour pork!

it's my very first experience to shovel snow on walkways.
it was snowing the night before, the snow is soft and fluffy. when i threw it out it actually flew like it was snowing.

but the moment i move it or stepped on it, it become compact, heavy and harder to shovel.

last saturday, just one day before i arrive in Yellowknife, the temperature was -35degree C, with a windchill of -46 degree C!!! (windchill = windy and temperature drops even lower)

as this place started off as a Gold Mines, now a diamond mines plus a exotic travlling place for tourist who wanted to explore the north icy climate and also to view the Northern Lights.

:o)

到了Calgary会暂住两晚,然后搭飞机到Edmunton;
